Understand what to expect and how to renew intimacy with your partner.By Mayo Clinic StaffSex after pregnancy happens. Honestly. First, however, vaginal soreness and sheer exhaustion are likely to take a toll. Whether youre in the mood or sexual intimacy is the last thing on your mind, heres what you need to know about sex after pregnancy. After the baby is born, how soon can I have sex?Whether you give birth vaginally or by Csection, your body will need time to heal. Consider waiting to have sex until your health care provider gives you the green light often four to six weeks after childbirth. This allows time for the cervix to close, postpartum bleeding to stop, and any tears or repaired lacerations to heal. The other important timeline is your own. Some women feel ready to resume sex within a few weeks of giving birth, while others need a few months or even longer. Factors such as fatigue, stress and fear of pain all can take a toll on your sex drive. Will it hurt?Hormonal changes might leave your vagina dry and tender, especially if youre breastfeeding. You might experience some pain during sex if youre healing from an episiotomy or perineal tears, especially extensive tears. To help ease any discomfort during sex, take it slow. Start with cuddling, kissing or massage. Gradually build the intensity of stimulation. If vaginal dryness is a problem, use a lubricating cream or gel. Try different positions to take pressure off any sore areas and control penetration. You might also discuss alternatives to vaginal intercourse, such as oral or manual stimulation, until healing is complete. Tell your partner what feels good and what doesnt. You might also take painrelieving steps beforehand, such as emptying your bladder, taking a warm bath or taking an overthecounter pain reliever. If you experience burning afterward, apply ice wrapped in a small towel to the area. Its also important to focus on the moment. Keep your mind on yourself and your partner not the diapers, laundry and other household chores. If sex continues to be painful, consult your health care provider about possible treatment options. Will it feel different? After childbirth, decreased muscle tone in the vagina might reduce pleasurable friction during sex which can influence arousal. This is usually temporary. To tone your pelvic floor muscles, try Kegel exercises. Simply tighten your pelvic muscles as if youre stopping your stream of urine. Work up to keeping the muscles contracted for 10 seconds at a time, relaxing for 10 seconds between contractions. Once youve got the hang of it, do at least three sets of about 10 Kegel exercises a day.

Issues such as low libido, vaginal dryness and chronic pain can arise. But dont be alarmed. All of these problems are common and can be solved.Based on information gathered from leading gynecologists, Dr. Oz discloses what you need to know about your vagina after age 40 so you can maintain a happy, healthy sex life.Thinning of the Vaginal WallsIn your 20s and 30s, the vaginal walls are bathed in hormones making them strong and robust. But as you enter your 40s, hormone levels, namely estrogen, gradually start to decline. This causes the walls, which are comprised of mucous membranes (vaginal mucosa) to become less resilient and more susceptible to trauma. Inflammation or tears are more likely to occur which can cause pain during sex.To check for thinning vaginal walls, take a handheld mirror and observe the color inside the opening of your vagina. Deep pink signifies healthy vaginal tissue, whereas, pale or very light coloring can mean fragile vaginal mucosa. If you think you have a problem, see your gynecologist who will examine the entire inside of the vagina with a speculum. Remember, even if youre not exhibiting symptoms you still need to your gynecologist once a year for routine checkups.TreatmentTreatment for thinning of the vaginal walls includes estrogen creams or tablets that can be inserted directly into the vagina an estrogen patch you can change weekly or a vaginal estrogen ring made of rubber or silicone, which can be kept in the vagina for 3 months. For an alternative to estrogen therapy, try moisturizing the vagina with a little olive oil.Vaginal AtrophyReduced estrogen levels can also cause shrinkage of the vaginal mucosa, which results in narrowing of the vaginal opening called the vestibule. In this case, pain can occur during initial penetration but often subsides once the penis is deeper inside. About 90 of vaginal pain occurs in the vestibule region.TreatmentVaginal atrophy can be treated with vaginal dilators available in different widths and sizes to help improve the elasticity and pliability of the vagina. Treatment usually involves 5 minutes of daily use with a lubricant. Be sure to discuss with your gynecologist before trying this treatment.Your pelvic floor just like your biceps is made of muscle. As a rule of thumb, medications that list dry mouth as a side effect also cause vaginal dryness. Low libido is another common side effect associated with hormonal change andor certain medications, especially antidepressants in the SSRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) category.TreatmentA variety of lubricants oil, water and siliconebased effectively combat vaginal dryness. Saliva also works well as a lubricant and can enhance foreplay.Misconceptions About the Female OrgasmThe better you know your body, the better your chance of having a fulfilling sex life. VAGINAS AND STRETCHING: THE FACTSThe vagina does stretch during sex.Intercourse with a larger penis will stretch it further. But it returns to its original shape and size after intimacy is over. The very first time you have sex can cause a permanent change in the size of the vagina.Width of vaginas can vary from woman to woman and that is completely normal. The average diameter is between 2 and 3.5cm.Childbirth can permanently change the shape of the vagina. Why Did Your Vagina Get Very Swollen After Sex? Is That Normal?Saturday, February 20, 2016 by Jessica BoothHi Heather,Im really freaked out. A few days ago, my boyfriend and I had sex without a condom. Afterwards, I felt like my vagina was pretty swollen, and when I looked down at it, I saw that it was VERY swollen. My right vaginal lip had swelled up, almost like a balloon, much bigger than the other side. It felt puffy and swollen, but not exactly painful, just uncomfortable. When I put underwear on, it felt like something was down there, but it was just the fact that my lip was so, so swollen. Although Ive felt swollen down there after sex before, Ive never experienced anything like that and it really scared me. It looked like my vagina was going inside out!I dont know why it happened. It was almost gone in the morning, although the area still felt a little tender. Is this normal or is there something wrong? We did change position a lot, but nothing was exceptionally rough. What should I do if it happens again?Vaginal swelling after sex is pretty normal, especially if you werent using a condom, but I can definitely see how it would be alarming if one side swells up to look quite large. Fortunately, this is pretty common and not an indication that something bigger is happening. Your down there area is so sensitive, and sometimes, the smallest thing can set it off. So, while it may be uncomfortable, its not exactly cause for concern.Intense vaginal swelling that results in a ballonlike appearance is most often the result of rough sex or not using enough lubrication . Vaginal swelling can also happen when youre really aroused, but in that case, it probably wouldnt swell up in that way although it certainly is possible. This is more likely from sexy time that was a little too rough, not using a condom and irritating your vag, or skimping on the lubrication. Lets quickly go through each possibility.Since a lack of lubrication is most likely the issue here, lets start with that. A lot of friction down there can easily cause some pretty serious swelling. If you werent wet enough down there , you probably felt it, and maybe you ignored it. Dont do that! Keep lube on handy this reduces the friction and will prevent that kind of swelling. This lack of lubrication is especially common when changing position a lot. Its easy for your vag to dry up or even for his penis to get a little softer, which tends to hurt a bit more. This could also be the case of rough sex, although you said you guys werent doing anything too crazy. In general, rough sex can lead to a lot of friction, and you might ignore it because pain is part of the process. Again, make sure youre using lube and please be careful.Sometimes a condom allergy can also cause swelling like this, although that clearly wasnt the issue here. In any case, please use a condom with a sexual partner even if you have an alternate form of birth control, nothing else protects against STDs.As for what to do once the swelling has already happened? First of all, relax. Freaking out and convincing yourself that something serious is wrong is only going to make things worse. Once youre more calm, wrap some ice in a paper towel or grab an ice pack, and gently place it near the swollen area (over underwear or under it, just dont put ice directly on the area without a paper towel or cloth). Like any other swollen body part, ice will help reduce the swelling by restricting blood flow. It will also make the area feel a little more comfortable. Put on loose sweatpants and consider going commando anything tight will irritate things further. Then just take it easy until the swelling goes down, which could take a few hours. If for some reason the swelling doesnt go away after a full 24 hours or gets worse, call a doctor to get yourself checked out. But in most cases, it will go away on its own. And to prevent it in the future, remember: lube is your friend. Good luck!take care,HeatherWhats onyourmind? Heather can help! Can sex really stretch out my vagina? We asked an doctor to weigh in on this myth.6 body language mistakes to avoidFlashback to your veryfirst period: Whether you were a young girl or older teen, the thought of sticking a little plastic tampon in your vagina may have seemed, well, daunting. (I have to put this where?)But as a grown woman, youve learnt your vagina is pretty resilient and totally flexible after all, it can stretch to accommodate everything from a tampon, to a penis, to a human baby.Still, no matter how wise you may be about your lady parts, chances are you may still feel confused about whats going on down there from time to time, especially when it comes to how your vagina responds to sex .One question that may have crossed your mind while getting it on: Is it possible for sex to stretch out my vagina?Read more: How your vagina changes in your 20s, 30s, 40s and 50sThe vagina is basically a muscular rubber band that that stretches during sex and returns to its original shape and size, Dr Michelle Metz, an gynae based in New York City tellsWomens Health. That said, the very first time you have sex does come with some size changes for the vagina.Generally a band of tissue called the hymen will break or tear which can sometimes lead to mild bleeding, she says, and the vaginal opening increases in size. The vaginal wall may also stretch if you havesex with differentsize partners, explains Dr Metz. But, as mentioned, your vagina generally bounces back into shape after youre done getting down. Its pretty impossible for sex alone to permanently stretch out the vagina, Dr Metz says. However, in some cases, although your vagina may not expand for good, you may experience some soreness or small tears like paper cuts down there, she says.Thats a sign that the vaginal skin stretched a bit too much. While this isnt something to be too concerned about, if youre having extreme discomfort every time you have sex, its probably a good idea to reach out to your gynae.Dr Metz says for some women with smaller vaginas, shell use tools such as a graduated vaginal dilator to help the body get used to a larger and larger diameter (a.k.a. the size of a reallife penis). And sometimes I send patients to a pelvic floor physical therapist.Dr Metz adds that in some cases, these challenges with sex may be caused by a more serious medical condition. You should definitely consult your gynae because some of those conditions can require surgical correction, she says. But even in cases where there are no underlying medical issues, its totally possible to experience discomfort andsoreness after sex, especially if your partner is particularly well endowed. If youre having trouble enjoying sex with a larger partner (and actually wish your vaginawouldstretch out), there are some things you can do in these cases, too.Dr Metz recommends having sex more often and longer to improve the stretchiness and elasticity of your vagina. You can also try easing into this with a dildo, before experimenting with your partner.Read more: These two treatments will change your life if you experience painful sexHowever, at the end of the day, if youre stressing about your vagina going all wideset on you, well stop you right there.Bottom line, according to Dr Metz: Its pretty impossible for sex alone to permanently stretch out the vagina. This article was originally published on www.womenshealthmag.comImage credit: iStock

EmailA strange tale of oral sex, a knife fight and the most unlikely of pregnancies recently brought to light by the blogosphere has doctors touting the triumphant persistence of sperm .In 1988, a 15yearold girl living in the small southern African nation of Lesotho came to local doctors with all the symptoms of a woman in labor. But the doctors were quickly puzzled because, upon examination, she didnt have a vagina.Inspection of the vulva showed no vagina, only a shallow skin dimple, so doctors delivered a healthy baby boy via Caesarean, the authors wrote in a case report published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her birth defect called Mullerian agenesis or MayerRokitanskyKsterHauser syndrome didnt necessarily surprise doctors, but her pregnancy did. Even the 15yearold girl could not believe she was pregnant .Yet by looking at her records the hospital staff realized the young woman was in the hospital 278 days earlier with a knife wound to her stomach. The average pregnancy lasts 280 days. After interviews, they gathered that Just before she was stabbed in the abdomen she had practiced fellatio with her new boyfriend and was caught in the act by her former lover . The fight with knives ensued. The girl arrived at the hospital with an empty stomach and therefore with little stomach acid around and doctors found two holes from a stab wound that opened her stomach up to her abdominal cavity . The case report said doctors washed her stomach out with a salt solution and stitched her up.A plausible explanation for this pregnancy is that spermatozoa gained access to the reproductive organs via the injured gastrointestinal tract, the authors wrote.Infertility experts note the story, which resurfaced on a Discovery magazine blog , is not only a testament to Murphys Law but one to arguably natures most impressive swimmers: sperm. How Could Sperm Survive Those Conditions?Heres an unbelievable set of coincidences, said Dr. Richard Paulson, head of the University of Southern California Fertility Program in Los Angeles. But its totally plausible.Although doctors know that sperm needs a low acid (high pH) environment to survive, and would likely die eventually in the low pH of stomach acid, doctors also said that sperm comes in a protective fluid: ejaculate, a nourishing medium meant to protect the sperm.Besides, out of hundreds of millions of sperm if you knock out 90 percent of them, youre still going to have tens of millions of sperm, said Dr. Peter Schlegel, chairman of urology at New York Presbyterian HospitalWeill Cornell Medical Center in New York.Paulson agreed.Sperm are pretty hardy, said Paulson, who pointed out that sperm must make it out of the acidic environment of the vagina before reaching more friendly territory at the cervix and in the uterus. Once in the abdominal wall, Paulson estimated that the sperm could survive for days. Its a long way from the stomach into the lower abdomen, its a heck of a trip, but they made it, said Paulson. You just need sperm somewhere in the area of an egg.Paulson said in the early days of fertility treatments in the 1980s, doctors injected sperm in the lower abdomen hoping for the coincidental encounter with an egg. The procedure, called DIPI or direct intraperitoneal insemination, has largely been replaced by more effective methods. The Lengths Sperm Can TravelSchlegel pointed out that although fertilization typically takes place in the fallopian tubes, doctors know that sperm can normally swim up and out of the reproductive organs into the abdominal cavity. The sperm are naturally there at times, and eggs are naturally there, said Schlegel. Eggs are released from the ovary, and they sort of dance around before they get taken up by the fallopian tube.Sperm Can Swim Far in the Female BodySo it seems, Schlegel concluded, that the sperm could also be taken up by the fallopian tube, as could a fertilized egg.But some doctors are still suspicious of, or at least bewildered by the tale. The girls birth defect is well known and by age 15, doctors say most girls would have been doubling over in pain with an abdomen filled with menstrual fluid that cannot escape. The menstrual fluid of several periods would make it even more unlikely for a pregnancy to occur.Shed have pain all the time and would have a stomach full of blood all the time, and would have to be operated on, or she would eventually die, said Dr. Sherman J. Silber, director of the infertility center of Saint Louis at St. Lukes Hospital in Missouri.Dr. Howard A. Zacur, a reproductive endocrinologist at Johns Hopkins, also had doubts. The case report here suffers from the fact that an individual with a completely obstructed vaginal outlet would have been expected to have blood accumulation in the vagina, andor uterus, he wrote in an email. The authors of the report guessed a pregnancy could only be possible if the girl had ovulated once or at most twice before her pregnancy.Whatever the true story of the woman, and her now grown son, Silber said it could send a message to ordinary couples planning pregnancy. Why Doubt the Longevity of Sperm? This story is a crazy story, and theres no way to make sense of it, said Silber. But the data on sperm is that normally its quite good in an alkaline environment for two or three days thats why the average couple wastes a lot of energy when theyre trying to get pregnant.Silber said he sees many couples who buy into the idea that they should time sex to coincide with the womans ovulation. But Silber said the remarkable survivability of sperm means most couples dont have to change their normal sex lives at all.The average American married couple tends to have sex two or three days a week, said Silber, author of How to Get Pregnant. If sperm can survive for two or three days, that means the average sex life of an American married couple results in living sperm swimming around the womans body every single day of the week. The practice to check when you ovulate and not to have sex until youre ovulating is stupid, Silber said.Silber said because ovulation calendars and methods to detect ovulation are somewhat inaccurate, couples could miss ovulation and have sex too late.Twelve hours after ovulation, the eggs arent good any more. You want to have the sperm there ready and waiting for when you ovulated, said Silber. Its absolutely true that sperm can last a long time.0 Shares

MbbbggOMG! I have to tell you all my experience. I am a newly Wed, I remained abstinent for 2 years before marriage as well as my husband. No std or anything!! No cheating, were good!..... So months after noticing I would have a fishy odor for a few days, on and off, I began to get irritated because I did not know what was going on. I stopped using my summers eve that Ive always used the spray or even baby wipes, thinking this was throwing off my ph balance. Or something.then I noticed I still had a fishy odor on and off. I finally realized after months it was happening after I was having intercourse with my husband.I did so much research on Google and so many women had the same experience. I then figured out semen affects women, causing bv or bv symptoms. Most were saying to douche with peroxide, or take meds. I finally made my hubby go get checked and his doctor and mine said semen is mixing with my fluids causing me to have a fishy odor. I was a little distraught but I came to terms with it. So, by coincidence, the next few days came around and we had intercourse as usual, I then used a wet paper towel to clean up the semen and threw it in my bedside trash can. I repeated this 3 days in a row. So today I was laying on the bed when I noticed the fishy odor again. I kept getting a whiff of it thinking the smell was trapped in the mattress. So I was a little frustrated. That my mattress had a odor to it. I happened to decide to investigate where the odor seemed to be the strongest and, to my surprise, IT WAS THE SEMEN ON THE PAPERTOWEL IN THE TRASH CAN. I smelled it and immediately the smell hit me hard! It was crazy, so now I am on a search to find out what is causing it because I realized it is not me at all, its my husband!! I get upset because women always feel its us, however Google Searches have allowed me to find that many men say their semen smells fishy. And I have witnessed it!! So not saying what me and many women are experiencing is not bv but we take all these meds and the issue in my case is only odor.!! And it turns out it is not me! I had to post this because this is a major find!! I now can research this through males perspectives and experienceS because they may be the underlying issue, in my case, my husbands semen is fishy not me!! So hope this helps!!Comment
